Block paving

Driveways we build

Block paving in herringbone with a charcoal border is a finish Steve lays often: red or brindle blocks, from front drives up to the garage to curved paths through a front garden. Herringbone is the usual pattern for a drive, because the blocks lock together in every direction under a turning car.

Block paving also lets one damaged or stained block be lifted and relaid on its own, which a poured surface cannot do.

What goes in before the blocks

The photo here shows a front drive part-way through: the sub-base laid and the posts in for a new handrail. The sub-base is the part nobody sees once the blocks go down, and it is what stops a drive sinking or rutting later.

Lesley West's TrustATrader review covers a drive relaid as part of a bigger job, with the garden tidied and cleared and hedges removed. It was the second job Steve had done for Lesley West.

Block paving, gravel and planting

Front gardens often mix finishes: block paving for the drive and a gravel border for planting. If you are thinking about gravel or concrete for the drive itself, ask Steve about it when he comes to quote.

If you are weighing them up, our guide Block paving, gravel or concrete: choosing a driveway in Dartford sets out the trade-offs, and the rainwater rule for front gardens.

This was the second job that Steve has done. My property is now tidier ad easier to maintain. Huge thanks. Had the garden tidied, cleared, removal of hedges and relaying drive.

Common questions

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?

In England, a new or replacement hard surface of more than five square metres in a front garden needs planning permission unless it is permeable or the rainwater runs to a lawn, border or soakaway within the property. A new dropped kerb needs approval from the highway authority as well. Raise it when Steve comes to quote.

Can you relay an old driveway?

Yes. A TrustATrader review from November 2024 covers a drive relaid along with a garden tidy, a clearance and hedges removed.

Which block paving pattern is best for a drive?

Herringbone is the usual choice where cars turn, because the blocks interlock in every direction. A contrasting border frames the drive and holds the edge. It is a finish Steve lays often.
